Dr. Ellis has over 20 years’ experience at the USPTO as an Administrative Patent Judge and patent examiner in the life sciences arts. She has served as an expert witness for some of the top law firms in the country on patent office procedure and patentability issues and as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. She has successfully provided sound, creative and insightful advice to help solve numerous intellectual property problems.
As an expert witness, Dr. Ellis combines her judicial and technical backgrounds to assist litigation teams develop winning strategies. She has testified as an expert witness for both branded and generic pharmaceutical companies on a range of topics including inventorship, inequitable conduct, double patenting, patent office procedure, written description, obviousness, derivation, and interference practice.
As patent prosecutor, Dr. Ellis applies her extensive experience as an Administrative Patent Judge where she wrote hundreds of inter partes and ex parte decisions in the chemical and biotech arts and as an examiner in the biotech group to help clients overcome difficult and/or repetitious rejections by examiners and defend their positions before the Patent Trial and Appeals Board. She advises clients on appeals of final USPTO and ITC judicial decisions to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in addition to managing patent portfolios.
As an arbitrator, Dr. Ellis conducts proceedings in a variety of contractual and patent disputes in a fair, but expeditious manner.
